Almost everything we know about why organizations fail to change has been learned backwards, from post-mortems. Vaughan's Columbia. Vuori and Huy on Nokia. The Francis Report on Mid-Staffordshire. The pattern is consistent enough that researchers have catalogued it for decades — but the catalog reads what happened only after the institution has already produced the failure the post-mortem then explains.

Undercurrent Research Labs pioneered a discipline for reading those same patterns in real time, while organizations are still operating and the people inside them still have room to decide what to do. We named the methodology Institutional Behavioral Analysis. It is the discipline of seeing what an organization is actually doing — beneath the strategy, beneath the org chart, at the layer where the institution decides what it can and cannot afford to face.

The research is operationalized in a SaaS platform called Undercurrent, designed for fractional executives, consultants, and advisors who work inside client organizations on substantial engagements.

Independent practitioners subscribe to Undercurrent and apply the method in their own client work. They bring the raw material of an engagement — observations, audio, emails — and the platform surfaces the patterns that let them read the institution at the layer where the resistance to change is actually generated.
